Like the rest of the region, Pula, which is situated at the southernmost tip of the peninsula, is known for its mild climate, tame sea, and unspoiled nature.
The city is best known for its many surviving ancient Roman buildings, the most famous of which is its first century amphitheatre, sixth largest in the world.
Eating & Drinking
Locally-caught seafood is very good in Pula although there is also a wide choice of pizza and pasta dishes to chose from as well as a wide choice of grilled, fried, stewed and barbecued meat, burgers and chicken.
The local wine and beer is inexpensive and there is a reasonably lively nightlife with choice of discos, bars and restaurants at Verudela.
Entertainment
If you are just looking to take things easy, then relax by one of the many hotel pools or book a local boat excursion.
If however you want a taste of the heritage that Croatia is famed for then visit the Roman amphitheatre, Arch of Sergii and Temple of Augustus remains. The amphitheatre, known locally as the Arena, is one of the best preserved amphitheatres from antiquity and is still in use today hosting a range of cultural events , rock concerts and opera performances.
There are various other Roman remains that are also worth a visit including the Arch of Sergii, the twin gates and the Augustan Forum.
Although there are no beaches in the actual town of Pula, the nearby Verudela headland is fringed by a rocky coastline equipped with tiered bathing decks and numerous small jetties ideal for sunbathing. The coastal waters offer beaches, fishing, wreck dives to ancient Roman galleys and World War I warships, cliff diving, and sailing.
The surrounding area
The Brijuni Islands National Park is also well-worth a visit and is made up of a group of two large islands and twelve small islets off the west coast of Istria. This is also the home of the famous Brijuni safari park. You can take a ride around the park on a little train as well as exploring the lovely bays here.
