The mystical city of Rome was built on seven hills and sprawls generously in all directions from the centre. Boasting a wealth of truly spectacular landmarks, Rome has so much to offer visitors. One of the main highlights must be a trip to the Vatican City, where the Pope makes an appearance each Sunday. Whether you're on a spiritual journey or not, few would fail to be inspired by the awesome architecture and magnificent art collections housed in the Vatican. A trip to Rome simply wouldn't be complete without a visit to see Michelangelo's creations in the Sistine Chapel.

The Forum is the commercial, political and religious centre of Rome and acts as a gateway to the Palatine hills, stretching high behind the busy city streets. The ruined marble columns of long-gone Roman temples and palaces reinforce the city's ancient roots. Far from the madding crowd, you can climb the Palatino, where there is a beautiful, green expanse and outstanding views across the city.
Rome isn't just a city for pilgrims and culture vultures. The Italians place a great deal of importance on family and in Rome it's no different, so there's no reason why children can't enjoy all that the city has to offer. Whether they're throwing a coin in the Trevi fountain or playing Roman gladiators at the Colosseum, younger visitors have a wealth of activities at hand. And, of course, there are always countless flavours of ice cream!
Eating & Drinking
Food is a big event in Rome and there's no shortage of authentic Italian restaurants and bars around the main squares at Piazza Navona, Piazza Della Rotonda (near the Pantheon) and the Piazza di Spagna at the foot of the famous Spanish Steps.
Although there's also a wide range of alternatives (Indian, Chinese, burgers, etc), most people find that pasta and pizza has never tasted as good as it does here, so when in Rome...
There are also lots of smart bars, clubs and piano bars to chose from and Campo dei Fiori, Piazza di Spagna and Trastevere are the best areas to head to for nightlife.
Entertainment
There are countless museums and famous historical sight to visit, not least the impressive Vatican City, The Colosseum, The romantic Trevi Fountain and the elegant Spanish Steps, so you wont be short of things to do.
However if you want a break from the culture, Rome is also known for its style and there are plenty of shops where you can discover that for yourself. Most designer shops are in the vicinity of the Spanish Steps while more affordable shops are located on Via Cola di Rienzo and Via Nazionale and in the Piazza Fiume areas. Via del Corso, with its upmarket boutiques and chain stores, is the city's main shopping street. There is also a popular Sunday flea market at Porta Portese.
